Rowe pleaded guilty in August to child neglect. Investigators said her son was unattended for at least 15 minutes while she was in a bathroom. Iain didn't have a life jacket.

The waves "were probably taller than he was,” said Ottawa County assistant prosecutor Lee Fisher.

More than 50 people this year have drowned in Lake Michigan in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin, according to the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project.
