Death of Grand Valley State student ruled accidental

Taylor DeRosa found dead Dec. 12 on campus

Taylor DeRosa, of Royal Oak

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The death of an 18-year-old Grand Valley State University student whose body was found last month on campus has been ruled accidental, caused by hypothermia.

Alcohol also contributed to Taylor DeRosa’s death, the school said Thursday.

DeRosa, a first-year student from Royal Oak, was found dead by a runner Dec. 12 near sports fields on the Allendale campus.

Grand Valley spokeswoman Mary Eilleen Lyon said an investigation showed DeRosa had attended several social gatherings.

Her body was found on a sidewalk about 400 to 500 yards from where she was let out of a vehicle. Security camera footage led investigators to conclude DeRosa did not interact with anyone else before she died, Lyon said.

Grand Valley State is in western Michigan, near Grand Rapids.
