How Michigan State University students, families can get crisis counseling after mass shooting

In-person, virtual counseling services available for people impacted by shooting

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State University has made crisis counseling available for students, staff, and families impacted by Monday night’s shootings.

Three Michigan State University students were killed and five others are hospitalized after a gunman opened fire on campus, according to police.

MSU Counseling and Psychiatric Services, or CAPS, is working with local providers to offer counseling for MSU students, staff, faculty and their families starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday (Feb. 14).

Counselors will be available at the Hannah Community Center located at 819 Abbot Rd, East Lansing, MI 48823. Those seeking counseling should check in at the front door and will be directed to crisis counselors. Counselors will be on-site at 8 a.m. and services will be available at 9 a.m. Water, facial tissues, face masks and hand sanitizers will be available.

Virtual listening spaces will be available separately for MSU students, faculty and staff. More information will be provided at a later time. CAPS and the Employee Assistance Program will provide virtual appointments for those with pre-scheduled appointments.

Virtual crisis counseling is available 24/7. Students can call CAPS at (517) 355-8270 and press “1″ to speak with a crisis counselor.
