LANSING, Mich. – A law to require an adult-sized changing table in most places with public restrooms will be reintroduced in the Michigan House.

Michigan Rep. Lori Stone is reintroducing “Liam’s Law,” which was inspired by an 8-year-old named Liam who has several impairments that will likely cause him to need diapers for the rest of his life.

According to a press release, very few public restrooms include a changing table or suitable area to change a diaper on someone over the age of three.

“We have resolved to seek changes so that our son, and millions of others like him, will never have to go through the humiliation, the shame and the undignified experience of being changed on a wet, dirty and unhygienic restroom floor ever again,” Liam’s mother Jessica Gomez said.

Stone first introduced “Liam’s Law” in 2020. In 2022, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services launched a grant program to help several public and private venues install adult-sized changing tables.

The law would require the installation of at least one universally-accessible adult changing table in most places with public restrooms.
