ALLEGAN, Mich. – A firework display in a West Michigan city went awry this week when at least one of the fireworks erratically shot into the crowd, causing some injuries.
Cell phone video captured the moment when fireworks shot into a crowd on Monday, July 3, in Allegan, Michigan. The city was hosting its Independence Day celebration near its downtown area. You can see some of the footage in the video above.
The city said in a statement that they contracted the show through Wolverine Fireworks Display Inc., which had been contracted by the city before. Officials did not say what exactly caused the fireworks to explode, but did say that the incident was not intentional.
At least one person was hospitalized due to the explosion, though their exact injuries are unclear. Witnesses say ambulances arrived at the scene, and were reportedly treating several people.
Multiple firework-related incidents occurred in Michigan around this year’s Fourth of July holiday. Also on the west side of the state, a firework explosion killed a 43-year-old woman and injured nine other people.
