1 year later, Michigan mom of 8 remains missing, case unsolved

Police believe Kelley was killed

Heather Mae Kelley (FBI Detroit)

It’s been one year since a Michigan mother of eight children was reported missing.

The FBI said last year that they believe a 35-year-old Portage, Michigan, woman, Heather Mae Kelley, who went missing in December 2022, could be a victim of a homicide.

The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office reported that Kelley called her kids the night she disappeared around 10:20 p.m. and told them she will be home soon, but she never showed up.

Officials said that they recovered her truck the next day and it was abandoned. Kelley’s vehicle was recovered in Comstock Township, and there was evidence of foul play, according to WOOD-TV -- an NBC affiliate in Grand Rapids.

Authorities arrested Kelley’s boyfriend, 38-year-old Carlos Watts of Kalamazoo, on Dec. 14 and was on a federal hold until April 26. Watts has been named a suspect, but has never been charged. He denies any involvement.

Kelley’s body has not been found.

Kelley’s family gathered on Sunday to honor her, holding candles and releasing balloons into the sky.

Anyone with information on Kelley and this situation are asked to call the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office at (269) 383-8748 or the Portage Department of Public Safety at (269) 329-4567.
