LUCE COUNTY, Mich. – The 2024 Tahquamenon Country Sled Dog Race in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula has been canceled due to lack of snow.

According to race organizers, the decision to cancel was because the trails have less than an inch of snow and no substantial snowfall is predicted before the sled dog race was set to begin.

“It is, of course, our first priority to have a safe race for dogs and their mushers, and there is no way we can achieve this with conditions as they are,” organizers said. “The lack of snow in our area is not only a detriment to us, but to the entire Tahquamenon community.”

The sled dog race was originally scheduled for Jan. 6 and Jan. 7, 2024. The decision to cancel the race was announced on Tuesday, Jan. 2. Anyone registered for the race will receive a refund.

The board of directors is considering options to run the race in the future. More information will be posted online and on Facebook.
