Winter weather alerts are in effect for most of Michigan with up to 10 inches of snow possible in some areas this week as a storm pushes across the state.
The messy winter storm is expected to start early Tuesday and last into Wednesday, bringing a mix of snow, rain and gusty winds -- but how much show depends on where you live in Michigan. The rain/snow line could change, which will impact snow totals. Here’s a roundup of expected snow in each region of the state.

Snow in Metro Detroit
We’ll be seeing the least amount of snow in this system for any region in the state, but it’s still be disruptive.
Here’s the latest update from 4Warn Weather’s Bryan Schuerman: With the approaching storm, we’re anticipating accumulating snow, rain and gusty winds. In response, our team has declared a 4Warn Weather Alert Day for Tuesday and Wednesday this week. The storm will likely disrupt your plans in some way, especially on Tuesday. Here’s what to expect over the next few days:
- Snow will continue falling through late morning/lunchtime on Tuesday.
- A slushy 1-3 inches of snow will be possible for most everyone through lunchtime. Higher amounts will be possible north of Metro Detroit where the cold air hangs on longer.
- Snow will change over to rain during the early afternoon on Tuesday.
- Rain will stick around through late Tuesday night, into the early portions of the overnight, and early Wednesday morning.
- Rain will change back to snow showers on Wednesday morning.
- Snow showers stick will dissipate by Wednesday afternoon/evening.
It’s also going to be rather breezy throughout this storm. Winds will gust up to at least 35 mph.

Snow in West Michigan
The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids is calling for about four inches of snow north of the rain/snow line. South of the snow line, snow is likely to melt. But it’ll depend on where that rain/snow line falls.
Snow in Lower Northern Michigan
A winter storm watch has been issued for most of the upper half of Lower Michigan, with 6-10 inches of snow forecasted for areas including: Petoskey, Cheboygan, Rogers City, Paradise, Trout Lake, Rudyard, Sault Ste. Marie, Brimley, Kinross, Sugar Island, Detour Village, Goetzville, Drummond Island, Engadine, Naubinway, Epoufette, St. Ignace, Brevort, Les Cheneaux Islands, Mackinac Island, St. James, and Charlevoix.
Here’s what NWS from Gaylord said: “A winter storm is expected to bring accumulating wet, heavy snow to northern Michigan Tuesday into early Wednesday. Gusts of 25-35 mph will accompany this system. Significantly reduced visibility and snow-covered roads will result in hazardous travel.”
Snow in the Michigan Upper Peninsula
Here’s the forecast from NWS in Marquette: Snow is forecast to begin tonight and continue into Tuesday night with the greatest snowfall amounts forecast across east-central Upper Michigan where the chance of at least 6 inches of snow is around 50%. Snowy conditions are expected to result in treacherous travel and we encourage you to make preparations today, before the snow begins.
