Rare blizzard warning issued for 11 Michigan counties ahead of winter storm

10-15 inches of snow expected in Northern Michigan counties

Southeast Michigan expected to get 5 to 8 inches of snow Wednesday

A rare blizzard warning will take effect Friday afternoon for 11 counties in Northern Michigan.

The blizzard warnings take effect a 5 p.m. on Friday and last through 7 p.m. on Saturday in the following counties:

  • Cheboygan
  • Presque Isle
  • Alpena
  • Alcona
  • Iosco
  • Mackinac Island/Bois Blanc Island

Expectations for these counties: Blizzard conditions expected. Total snow accumulations of 10 to 15 inches anticipated with localized amounts of 18 inches possible. Frequent wind gusts of 35 to 50 mph this evening and tonight with potential for 60 mph wind gusts, especially near the Lake Huron shoreline.


The blizzard warnings take effect a 5 p.m. on Friday and last through 7 p.m. on Saturday in the following counties:

  • Otsego
  • Montmorency
  • Crawford
  • Oscoda
  • Ogemaw

Expectations for these counties: Blizzard conditions expected. Total snow accumulations of 10 to 15 inches anticipated with localized amounts of 18 inches possible. Frequent wind gusts of 35 to 50 mph expected this evening and tonight.

The rest of the state is under winter storm warnings or winter weather advisories.
