Michigan residents might have some unclaimed cash or property waiting for them.
The Michigan Department of Treasury is reminding residents to check online to see if they have anything that still needs to be claimed.
“Even if you have searched for unclaimed property recently, please check our website again. Our unclaimed property database is updated multiple times throughout the year. My team is ready to help begin the process to reunite you with your unclaimed property or assets,” said Terry Stanton, who oversees Michigan’s Unclaimed Property Program.
How to find out if you have unclaimed cash or property
The treasury has millions of dollars in lost or forgotten assets that include dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, valuables left in safe deposit boxes, and stock certificates. The treasury is in charge of the assets until they are rightfully claimed by the owners or the owers’ heirs.
To find out if you have unclaimed cash or property, all you have to do is visit Michigan’s Unclaimed Property website and put in your information.
You may want to search your name, your maiden name, and the name of a business or nonprofit. It is completely free to search for and claim your property.
The website will allow you to upload verifying documentation to confirm who you are and claim the cash or property. Claimants may also call 517-636-5320 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Just last year in Michigan, $138.5 million was returned to rightful owners and heirs last year and more than $600 million over the last five years.
