Michigan high school students can enter to win a scholarship by creating a “persuasive message” that shows how they would convince new drivers to reduce distractions while on the road.
Kelsey’s Law Distracted Driving Awareness Scholarship was created to honor Kelsey Raffaele, 17, of Sault Ste. Marie. She died in a cell phone-related car crash in 2010. The scholarship aims to inspire change in teens who drive distracted and prevent car crashes.
Students who apply for the scholarship need to create a message using a video, graphic, or Tweet that resonates with other people their age.
Entries will be judged on the following:
- Ability to persuade others, especially teen drivers, to stop texting while driving.
- Ability to grab the attention of your friends, peers and family.
- A clear and understandable message.
- Demonstration of your personal creativity and ingenuity.
Students have until March 31, 2024, to apply online. There will be four winners, with the top scholarship being worth $2,000. The scholarship will be applied toward tuition at any university, college, or technical school.
To qualify, you must be an 11th or 12th grade student attending a public or private Michigan school. Applicants are also required to be a Michigan resident and have a valid Michigan driver’s license.
