Michigan spring storm: How much snow to expect by region

Up to four inches possible in parts of Metro Detroit

Southeast Michigan expected to get 2 to 6 inches of snow Saturday.

4Warn Weather – In true Michigan weather fashion, spring is off to a very wintry start -- and it’ll feel even more like it later this week.

A system moving through the state late Thursday into Friday is expected to leave behind several inches of snow in some areas, including parts of Metro Detroit.

Snow models are likely going to change as we get closer to Friday, but here’s a roundup of what’s forecasted in every region of Michigan:

Snow in Metro Detroit

Here’s the latest from 4Warn Weather’s Ashlee Baracy: Temps will stay cold on Thursday with highs back in the 30s, but clouds will give way to some sunshine. The day should remain dry.

Accumulating snowfall is expected for much of Southeast Michigan on Friday. The snow will roll in before daybreak and stick around much of the day.

It is likely that most of Metro Detroit could see 1-2 inches of snow, whereas accumulations of 3-4 inches are possible along and north of M-59.

That snow won’t stick around too long. We will be on either side of 40 degrees this weekend with a mix of sun and clouds.

Snow in West Michigan

Here’s what the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids says: Low pressure approaches from the west bringing measurable snow Thursday night into Friday with impacts to travel for the Friday morning commute expected.

Snow in Northern Lower Michigan

Here’s what to expect from the NWS in Gaylord: Storm system will move into Michigan on Friday spreading a swath of moderate to heavy snowfall possible. Best potential for 4 inches or more of snow will be along and south of M-72. Friday morning and evening commutes will be snow packed and hazardous.

Snow in Michigan Upper Peninsula

Here’s what to expect from the NWS in Marquette: Lake effect snow persists today into Thursday. Additional light totals up to 1 to 2 inches are expected in the NW wind belts of the western UP, but 4 to 8 inches of additional snow are possible across the east.

Blustery winds the rest of today may lead to blowing snow, resulting in reduced visibility and hazardous driving conditions especially across the eastern UP.
