Much of Michigan, including parts of Metro Detroit, could see several inches of snow on Friday as a spring storm moves through the state.
The system will move in late Thursday for some areas and last thru the day on Friday, before temps warm up again and melt everything -- of course. Here’s what to expect around the state.
Snow in Metro Detroit
Here’s the latest from 4Warn Weather’s Ashlee Baracy: Friday is a 4Warn Weather Alert Day as we anticipate accumulating snow for much of Southeast Michigan.
The snowfall will begin close to daybreak, starting lightly around 5 a.m. across Metro Detroit. The flakes will stick around much of the day.
Snow will become far more widespread by around 8 a.m., and will impact the morning commute. We’ll experience a slight lull in snowfall around 3 p.m. or 4 p.m., though flakes are still possible at that time.
The band of snow will build back up, however, in the evening. Snow will become widespread once again around 8 p.m.
It is likely that most of the Metro area could see 1-2 inches of snow. There will be lesser amounts closer to the state line where rain could mix in. Accumulations greater than 4 inches are possible along and north of M-59.
Snow in West Michigan
Here’s what to expect from NWS in Grand Rapids: Winter returns Friday with accumulating snow likely impacting the Friday morning commute. Snow totals may exceed 4 inches near and north of I96 with lesser totals south.
Snow in Northern Lower Michigan
Here’s what to expect from NWS in Gaylord: Another system moving through the region will bring a better shot of widespread accumulating snow to Michigan starting early Friday morning. A narrow band of heavy snow is expected to develop with this system, though recent trends in guidance suggest this may end up occurring across the southern half of the state.
Additionally, SE flow off Lake Huron should boost snowfall totals across parts of northeast Lower MI and the EUP, though this may only result in a couple extra inches of snow. Even if snow accumulations end up lower than expected, roads could still become slick and crummy for both the Friday morning and evening commutes.
Snow in Michigan Upper Peninsula
Here’s what to expect from NWS in Marquette: A system will move through the Midwest, bringing light snow to the U.P. late tonight and Friday. 1 to 3 inches of snow is generally expected, and the higher probability of seeing at least 2 inches will be across the south-central.
The snow may result in some hazardous driving conditions. If you’re out tonight or Friday remember to give yourself extra time, leave extra space between vehicles on the road, and drive with your headlights on!
