Suspected drunk driver hits family walking in central Michigan, kills 2

14 others, including kids, injured Saturday

WATERTOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A suspected drunk driver crashed into a large group of family members walking in central Michigan over the weekend, killing two men and injuring more than a dozen other people, including children.

In the evening of Saturday, May 18, a group of at least 16 family members were walking on the shoulder of South Wacousta Road near Corrison Road in Watertown Township, just northwest of Lansing. At around 6:30 p.m., a believed drunk driver crashed into the group, and then drove away, officials reported.

A 30-year-old man from Grand Haven and a 42-year-old man from Grand Ledge were killed in the crash and were pronounced dead at the scene. Police did not share their names as of Monday morning.

Another 14 people were injured and were taken to the hospital, according to the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office. Eight of them had been released from hospitals as of late Sunday, while six others were still in critical condition.

Authorities initially reported that 13 people were injured.

The names of those injured were not provided by police as of Monday morning.

The suspected drunk driver, a 35-year-old woman from the village of Perrinton -- also in mid-Michigan -- was arrested Saturday after being stopped by deputies “several miles away” from the crash scene. She was being held at the Clinton County Jail, and was scheduled to be arraigned on charges on Monday, May 20.

It was not said exactly what charges the driver faced. Her name will become public once she is officially arraigned.

The Clinton County Sheriff’s Office said late Sunday that a follow-up investigation was “still in progress.” They were expected to share more information about the case in the coming days.
