Several Michigan beaches, including one in Southeast Michigan, are facing closures heading into the weekend due to an increased bacteria level.
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality flagged seven Michigan beaches for increased bacteria levels, as of May 31.

Most of the high bacteria levels are due to storm water runoff. Storm water runoff causes issues for beaches across the state. Some are listed as “unknown” cause.
The 7 Michigan beaches listed (as of May 31, 2024) are:
- Lake Michigan - Henes Park (Menominee)
- Lake St. Clair - St. Clair Shores Memorial Park Beach (Macomb)
- Saginaw Bay - Whites Beach (Arenac)
- Saginaw Bay-Lake Huron - Arenac County Park (Arenac)
- Saginaw Bay-Lake Huron - Hammel Beach Road Access (Arenac)
- Saginaw Bay-Lake Huron - Twining Road Beach (Arenac)
- Saginaw Bay-Lake Huron - Singing Bridge Beach (Arenac)
Michigan has a total of 1,235 public beaches and 575 private beaches.
