14 Michigan beaches closed for elevated bacteria levels

2 beaches in Southeast Michigan

More than a dozen Michigan beaches are facing closures heading into the weekend due to increased bacteria levels.

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality flagged the 14 Michigan beaches for increased bacteria levels, as of June 21. Two of them are in Southeast Michigan.

Most of the closures are due to run off from recent stormy weather.

The 14 Michigan beaches listed (as of June 21, 2024) are:

  • Lake St. Clair - St. Clair Shores Memorial Park Beach Macomb
  • Lake Michigan - Oval Beach Allegan
  • St. Mary’s River - Sugar Island Township Park Chippewa
  • Independence Lake - Independence Lake County Park Washtenaw
  • Billings Lake - Manton Park Wexford
  • Lake Cadillac - Kenwood Park Wexford
  • Grand Traverse Bay-West - Suttons Bay Marina Park & Beach Leelanau
  • Cedar River - Gladwin City Park Gladwin
  • Ross Lake - Beaverton City Park Gladwin
  • Houghton Lake - Denton Township Public Beach Roscommon
  • Houghton Lake - Lakeview Waterfront Park Roscommon
  • Lake St. Helen - Richfield Township Public Fishing Site Roscommon
  • Muskegon Lake - Water Sports Park Muskegon
  • Mona Lake - Ross Park Beach Muskegon

Michigan has a total of 1,235 public beaches and 575 private beaches.
