PARADISE, Mich. – Officials with Tahquamenon Falls State Park are urging vigilance after a string of cunning thefts.

A group of sly thieves have been managing to outfox Rivermouth campers and steal their flip-flops and Crocs. The suspects are described as having red or gray hair, being capable of running up to 30 mph, having retractable claws and being super cute.

It’s a fox. They’re foxes. A skulk of foxes is stealing the sandals.

Park officials said they recovered 13 pieces of footwear from outside a fox den in the park. Some of the recovered sandals had toothmarks, while others had straps chewed off.

Campers are urged to keep their shoes inside to prevent their swiping.

Michigan is home to two species of fox, the gray fox and the red fox. Both species are on the Red List of Threatened Species, but they are in the lowest tier of conservation status and are unlikely to become endangered or extinct any time soon. While they live in every area of the state, the Upper Peninsula has the highest fox population.
