More than a dozen Michigan beaches are facing closures heading into the weekend due to increased bacteria levels.

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality flagged the 14 Michigan beaches for increased bacteria levels, as of July 26. Five of them are in Southeast Michigan.

Most of the closures are due to run off from recent rain.

The 14 Michigan beaches listed (as of July 26, 2024) are:

  • Saginaw Bay-Lake Huron - Singing Bridge Beach: Arenac
  • Sugden Lake - Oakridge Subdivision: Oakland
  • Dumont Lake - Dumont Lake County Park Beach: Allegan
  • Ross Lake - Beaverton City Park: Gladwin
  • Lake Superior - Brimley State Park: Chippewa
  • Houghton Lake - Lakeview Waterfront Park: Roscommon
  • Crescent Lake - Crescent Lake Park Oakland
  • Independence Lake - Independence Lake County Park: Washtenaw
  • Lake of the Woods - Woolfe Park: Van Buren
  • Lake Bellaire - Richardi Park: Antrim
  • Lake St. Clair - St. Clair Shores Memorial Park Beach: Macomb
  • Thornapple Lake - Charlton Park: Barry
  • Big Seven Lake - Seven Lakes State Park: Oakland
  • Lake White Cloud - City of White Cloud Rotary Park: Newaygo

Michigan has a total of 1,235 public beaches and 575 private beaches.
