A Grand Rapids man was in disbelief when his friend checked his Powerball ticket for him and told him he won $1 million.

Juan Silvera, 69, matched the five white balls in the March 30 drawing to win the big prize: 12-13-33-50-52. He bought his winning ticket at Paris Spirits & Wine, located at 2871 East Paris Avenue Southeast in Kentwood.

“I play Powerball regularly,” said Silvera. “After the Powerball drawing, I took my ticket to the store and scanned it and got a message to visit the Lottery office. I showed my friend the message I got, so he scanned my ticket using the Lottery app. When he showed me his phone screen with the amount of $1 million, I was in disbelief!”

Silvera visited Lottery headquarters recently to claim his prize. He plans to save his winnings.

“Winning is an excellent feeling! As of now, I plan to save my winnings and continue working,” said Silvera.
