Free gun locks are available to Michigan residents.

Free gun locks are available at MDHHS county offices and some health departments across Michigan. In the one year since Michigan’s secure storage law went into effect more than 56,800 free gun locks have been given out.

In Michigan, individuals are required to keep stored or unattended firearms unloaded and locked with a locking device or stored in a locked box or container if a minor is likely to be on the premises. Public Act 17 of 2023 went into effect on Feb. 13, 2024.

State officials said Michigan State Police used $500,000 in state funding to purchase thousands of cable-style gun locks from Project ChildSafe.
