SOUTHGATE, Mich. – The impact of a crash early Tuesday morning sent a car so high in the air that it landed on the top of an auto shop building in Southgate.
Police said the car hit a landscaping wall in front of a gas station at Dix Highway and Northline Road before it went airborne, hit a parked tow truck, smashed a sign on top of Motor City Auto Care and then landed on another tow truck.
The car, a Mazda 6, was stuck partially on the building and partially on a tow truck.
The driver, a 30-year-old Southgate man, is expected to be OK. He was treated at a hospital. Alcohol is suspected to be involved.
"We thought he was dead," said Stephen Bermudez, who works at Motor City Auto Care. "He wasn't even responding. We tried calling, 'Hey, you need help or anything?' but he didn't respond, so the cops came and found him. His car was like an accordion and then the cops cranked open the door and got the guy out."
