FBI raids River Rouge School Board offices

FBI investigates River Rouge schools after state audit shows Title One rule violations

RIVER ROUGE, Mich. – FBI agents executed a search warrant Wednesday evening at the River Rouge School Board offices.

It has been six months filled with drama for the Downriver district. Former Superintendent Dr. Carlos Lopez is suing the School Board for breach of contract. He is citing whistleblower protections after the School Board fired him earlier this year.

Lopez was let go after he asked the state of Michigan to investigate how River Rouge was spending Title One funds. That cash is meant for children from low-income families.

The state audit showed the district violated numerous rules for spending that money. Now, the FBI's unit which concentrates on government corruption has paid the district a visit.

School Board President Valveeta Reese did not speak with Local 4 about the raid on Wednesday. She would not come out of her house to speak with Local 4 about the investigation. A man at her home told Local 4 reporter Mara MacDonald that she "better not walk up on his property."

The man then complained that Local 4 was not doing a story on River Rouge baseball instead of the FBI's probe into the district.
