Huntington Woods among 'top 10' best American suburbs

Coldwell Banker calls Huntington Woods No. 10 on best suburbs in America list

HUNTINGTON WOODS, Mich. – Huntington Woods has 6,200-plus neighbors living within 1.2 miles. It's the very definition of a close-knit community.

Now, the small Metro Detroit community has made a list of America's top 10 suburbs, coming in at No. 10.

Coldwell Banker used 20 different yardsticks to rank the cities on the list including percentage of home ownership, school performance, amenities such as ATMs, coffee shops, libraries, number of commuters and whether residents eat dinner at home.

Among the cities on the list, Huntington Woods is No. 1 in home ownership, No. 2 in overall amenities and the city received10 points out of the possible 10 for school performance and quality.

"This city just comes alive at 5 or 6 o'clock. There are people walking or just riding. It's a great place to live," said Richard Szelepski, a 30-year resident of Huntington Woods.

The news about it's national rank comes as no surprise to the city's mayor of 31 years.

"And then, they put an investment in. Right? So what do they want to do? They want to keep that investment going. So, you drive through the neighborhood and the communities are beautiful. The houses are beautiful," said Mayor Ronal Gillham.

For 21 years, Huntington Woods has been a Tree City USA winner. The residents put down deep roots, too. Folks stay in their home twice as long as the average family.

Other Michigan cities which made the list include East Grand Rapids at No. 8, Orchard Lake at No. 24, Grosse Pointe Farms at No. 47, Beverly Hills at No. 58 and Franklin at No. 93.
