New allegations arise in cancer doctor Farid Fata case

OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – Doctor Farid Fata is appealing his conviction that led to a 45-year prison sentence.

Fata billed Medicare and insurance companies for an estimated $34 million by recommending chemotherapy and other costly treatments for people who did not have cancer and over-medicating those patients who did have the disease.

Former employee George Karadsheh was the whistleblower whose complaints started a federal investigation into Fata's practices.

Now, attorneys for Karadsheh have filed a new civil complaint in federal court which makes new allegations and names new defendants.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Detroit is asking a judge for 6 months to investigate the allegations made in what is currently a sealed document. The U.S. Attorney's Office will neither confirm nor deny the investigation will take place.

Karadsheh reportedly has reached agreement with the government on his own whistleblower's share of the money recovered in the case. He could have gotten anywhere from 15 to 25 percent of the estimated $10 million. However, he reportedly agreed to 10 percent so more money can go to Fata's victims and their families.
