LANSING, Mich – New legislation introduced in the Michigan state house would prohibit drivers from driving with a dog on their lap.
The bill was unveiled Tuesday by Detroit Democratic Rep. LaTanya Garrett.
It states that one should not be allowed to drive with a dog on their lap unless it is there for a medical purpose.
If violated a driver would be fined $100 on the first offense and $200 on each offense there after.
Some states already ban dogs from riding on drivers laps, but in Michigan current law says an animal cannot be transported in a vehicle without there being a secure space for them to stand, turn around or lay in.
According to the Michigan Legislature website House Bill 5277 has been referred to the Transportation and Infrastructure committee for further review.
