Police cruiser, ambulance windshields shattered by flying object on WB I-94 in Detroit

Officials unsure what caused windshields to shatter

DETROIT – A Wayne County Community College police car and a Superior Ambulance were hit by an object that shattered both windshields on I-94 in Detroit, officials said.

UPDATE: State police: I-94 driver says she didn't know her wheel went into oncoming traffic

The incident happened in the westbound lanes, just west of East Grand Boulevard on Detroit's east side, police said.

Police believe it was a tire that struck both windshields. It hit the squad car of an off-duty Wayne County Community College police officer first, then bounced into an ambulance driving behind the officer's car.

"I was driving on the freeway, and just off the side of the road, it's like somebody tossed a tire out into the freeway," the off-duty officer said.

He said he believes the tire came onto the freeway from the side.

"I was startled," he said.

The impact sent glass flying on the highway and left the occupants of both vehicles shaken up.

"Courageously, they kept their calm," Detroit police Capt. Darin Szilagy said. "They were able to get these vehicles over to the side of the road. It could have been a disaster, but they kept their calm and got the vehicles off the road safely."

Both vehicles were struck on the driver's side of the windshield. The windshield of the ambulance has a large hole in the middle, and the police car's windshield is completely shattered on the driver's side.

Police said there have been no reports of injuries. All the officials involved left the scene safely.

The vehicles were towed from the shoulder during the investigation.

Video shows Detroit police looking at a Chrysler SUV they believe is the vehicle that lost a tire. The tire was found right near Chene Street and I-94, but the driver of the SUV is nowhere to be found, police said.

Investigators are working to find out if the tire fell off the car and came tumbling down onto the freeway or if something more serious happened.
