Police presence increased in Detroit's Greektown after violent street brawl

Business owners worried about crime in Greektown

DETROIT – The fallout from a fight in Greektown early Sunday morning has been swift, as Detroit Police Chief James Craig upped the police presence in Greektown to the summer staffing levels, starting Monday.

There were constant patrols Monday evening, especially in the place where the fight broke out.

Police are going from business to business looking at surveillance video and trying to track the people involved in the fight back to their cars to identify them.

Police believe the savage fight in the middle of the street was gang related. As officials try to identify the people involved, business owners are worried about another black eye.

"Everybody knows Greektown is safe," a business owner said. "When you come down here, your kids, your family, you're going to have a good time. Two or three more fights like that and who would want to come down here?"

Arthur Kesto has been in Greektown since 1995. He said he needs two security guards in his liquor store in the summer because of a lack of police presence. He said the summer is when fights ramp up.

"How are two officers going to handle 30 people fighting in the street?" Kesto asked.

After seeing what happened in front of his store two nights ago, Kesto is flat-out begging police for help.

"Please, please, we do need more help here, and they should know that," Kesto said. "If this place goes down, the whole downtown will go down, in my opinion."

Summer deployment levels were moved up to Monday, so Kesto is getting some of the help he's asking for.
