DETROIT – DTE Energy said about 8,500 of its customers are without power because of high winds and thunderstorms blowing across southeast Michigan.
The outages are concentrated in Monroe, Washtenaw and southern Wayne counties, DTE officials said. Overall, 89,000 DTE customers were affected.

DTE officials said the severe weather caused hundreds of tree limbs to snap and more than 300 power lines to fall.
Crews are working 16-hour shifts around the clock to restore service. DTE officials said the vast majority of customers will have their power back on by the end of the day Friday.
Customers should stay at least 20 feet away from all power lines and anything the lines are in contact with, and consider them live, DTE officials said. Every downed power line should be treated as if it were energized.
DTE officials said customers should also heed the warning of yellow caution tape, which indicates there is a downed power line in the area. Customers are advised to not cross yellow caution tape.
Customers can report an outage, check the status of an outage and view an outage map on their smartphones by using the DTE Energy Mobile app. Customers can also call DTE Energy at 800-477-4747 to report power outages or downed lines. Customers can also use the website at dteenergy.com.
