Earlier Wednesday, police in Bedford, New York, said they were investigating a "possible unattended death" at an address owned by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Her family confirmed in a statement through a lawyer on Wednesday. There was no immediate indication of the cause of death.

"We deeply regret the death of our beloved sister Mary, whose radiant and creative spirit will be sorely missed by those who loved her. Our heart goes out to her children who she loved without reservation."

"We have no further comment at this time."

The couple married in 1994. Robert filed for divorce in May 2010 and, three days later, Mary was arrested on suspicion of DUI in Westchester County, authorities said at the time.

They had four children together.

Robert Kennedy Jr. is the son of former Sen. Robert Kennedy and nephew of President John F. Kennedy.
