Smoke bombs force evacuation at junior high in Shelby Township; students arrested

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Five students at Malow Junior High School in Shelby Township were taken into custody Thursday morning after smoke bombs were detonated in the cafeteria. 

The school had to be evacuated. At least one staff member was transported to a nearby hospital due to smoke inhalation. 

No other injuries have been reported. 

Jason Schmittler, acting deputy chief with the Shelby Township Police Department, released this statement: 

Two spent smoke bombs were recovered from the cafeteria. One staff member was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation. No students were injured. Officers arrested five juvenile students, all from Malow Jr High, at the scene and transported them to STPD. Police, fire and Utica Community Schools worked together to bring the incident under control quickly. The arrested will be transported to the Macomb County Juvenile Facility pending review of charges by the Macomb County Prosecutors Office. The investigation is still on going and witnesses are asked to contact the Shelby Township Police Department at 586-731-2121."

Malow Junior High is situated along 25 Mile Road just east of Mound Road.
