AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Students at Avondale High School staged a sit-in Friday morning due to a number of concerns the student body has about the school’s budget and operations.
The halls of the high school were lined with hundreds of students, sitting in protest as the first bell rang.
Dalis Woods, a senior, was one of the students who organized the event.
“We’ve dealt with a lot of adversity and changes within the administration and a lot of us have felt like we didn’t have a voice,” Woods said. “A lot of people are saying that they’re cutting six teachers and we were upset because usually teachers do the most impact for the kids.”
She wrote the following letter to administrators:
Avondale School District released the following statement:
“About 250 Avondale High School students staged a peaceful protest in the form of a 'sit-in' inside the high school today. Students were engaged in discussion with high school administrators as well as Avondale School District administrators including Superintendent Dr. James Schwarz, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum Carmen Kennedy, and Assistant Superintendent of Student Services Martin Alwardt.”
The seniors who organized the protest only have eight days of school left.
“I’m just amazed that the senior class was able to make a difference for the kids next year,” Woods said.
The students talked to administrators about programming and building operations. Discussions lasted until about 10:20 a.m. and the students resumed their school schedule.
