Suspected drunk driver accused of killing teen arraigned on charges

Julius Jones died Saturday morning, 3 others hurt in crash on Groesbeck Highway

FRASER, Mich. – A driver accused of being drunk behind the wheel this weekend when he rear-ended a car on Groesbeck Highway, killing a 19-year-old Roseville High School senior, faced a judge Monday for arraignment on charges.

Julius Jones, 19, was killed early Saturday morning when the Lincoln Mark 8 he was in with three other young people was rear-ended by a Buick SUV near 14 Mile Road in Fraser.

Police said the Buick's driver, 24-year-old Kyle Kumbo, had been speeding and blew a .134 on a preliminary breath test.

He pleaded not-guilty to charges of operating while intoxicated causing death and operating while intoxicated causing injury.

Jones and and the other victims all went to Roseville High School. A 20-year-old man remains in critical condition; the 2 others are in stable condition.

Jones' mother, Vicki, said her son was waiting to graduate and go on to the military.

"In all sincerity, he was a good kid. Everybody loved him," she said. "If you drink, that's your prerogative. Do what you want to do, but you have to think about everyone else out here. Nobody wants to get that knock on their door in the middle of the night, saying your kid is gone because some drunk driver has hit him."
