Tire, rim thieves hit Birmingham neighborhood

BIRMINGHAM, Mich. – The Birmingham Police Department is investigating after the wheels were stolen from two sport utility vehicles near the Shain Park area.

Jason Snooks' wife discovered the theft Sunday morning.

"I woke up to my wife telling me our car was on the blocks, which I kind of understood that meant that wasn't a good thing and that I didn't have tires anymore," Snooks said.

They went outside and found all the wheels on their Suburban stolen.

"At least (the thief) put the car on blocks. (I'm) just laughing to keep from crying," Snooks said.

Snooks had wheel locks on his SUV and whoever took his wheels left the locks behind.

"We don't have a garage to put both cars in, so I don't know what (else) we could do other than hope it doesn't happen again, which isn't a great strategy," he said.

His neighbor a couple blocks over also had the wheels taken from his Lincoln Navigator.

"At about 8 o'clock, the police knocked on my door and I was inside doing some work, and they told me that the car was on bricks in my driveway, so we came out and here it is," David Thomas said.

Thomas said something like this hasn't happened before.

"It's unfortunate. We've been here 10 years. It's a lovely neighborhood. We love living here," Thomas said. "When this happens, it always feels like it's an invasion of privacy."

Thomas said he isn't sure what to do about it now.

"I thought I need to get locking wheel nuts, but it appears my neighbor had this happen to him and he has locking wheel nuts, so I'm not quite sure what to do about this," he said.

Snooks said he was given an estimate that it would cost about $3,000 to replace the wheels on his SUV.

Both victims are hoping it doesn't happen again and that the person gets caught.

"I wish they hadn't done it, and it's really disappointing you have to steal from other people," he said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Birmingham Police Department.
