Officials said the man is from Roseville. He is in custody, and police are taking him to a psychiatric evaluation, officials said.
Police said they were in communication with a man who was inside a car in a parking lot on campus.
Student told not to leave library
A student who said she was studying for an exam at the library told Local 4 she was getting ready to leave the building and was told not to go outside.
"I was actually walking out of the building and they told me to come back into the building," said Megan O'Bryan, a senior studying biology. "I was about to go home, and then as soon as they told us what was happening I called my mom and told her what was happening."
She said the building nearest to the man is right next to the library, so nobody had moved.
"Our building is on lockdown right now," O'Bryan said. "We're just kind of sitting here waiting to get any more news."
O'Bryan said she was waiting with about 40 students on the first floor of the library. She said everyone is OK, but nervous.
She said the library closes at 11:45 p.m. every night, and there are normally students in the building until it closes.
Emergency alert sent to students
Students were told to stay away from the doors and windows. They have been alerted by the school that there is a police situation.
"We got a phone call from campus safety, and we also got a text message and an email," O'Bryan said.
Here's the emergency alert that was sent to students:
"UM Dearborn Emergency Alert. The City of Dearborn and Campus Police report a police incident on campus, Lot E5.
"Avoid area. Shelter in Place. Do NOT leave buildings.
"Only call 911 for help or if you have information about the incident.
"Wait for All Clear from University Police."
