White pickup truck follows student walking home from Farmington 5-6 Campus in Garden City

GARDEN CITY, Mich. – Garden City Public Schools issued a warning to parents Wednesday after a student was followed by a white pickup truck while walking home from Farmington 5-6 Campus.

The student was walking home Tuesday when "a white pickup truck with a cab" slowly started keeping pace with the child, officials said. The incident was reported to Garden City Public Schools by the child's parent.

The incident happened on Marquette Street near Schuman Street, officials said.

Garden City Public Schools has requested increased patrols near the school buildings during dismissal time.

"It is at times like this when, as a community of concerned citizens, we realized how beneficial it is to have such a proactive police department," said Rosemary Gross, director of student services for Garden City Public Schools, in an email to parents. "Student safety is the No. 1 priority in Garden City Schools. As a school community, we are fortunate to have such a close relationship with our local police department, and Garden City police officers have continued to provide an outstanding level of support to our schools."

Gross asked parents to have a conversation with students about stranger danger issues.
