Woman killed by SMART bus in Troy

37-year-old hit while crossing Maplelawn Drive at Crooks Road

TROY, Mich. – A 37-year-old woman was killed Tuesday night when she was hit by a SMART bus while crossing a street in Troy.

Police said the bus was turning from Crooks Road onto Maplelawn Drive when it hit the woman, who was in the crosswalk on Maplelawn Drive. She has been identified as Sally LaMay. Family members say she was walking home to her apartment.

Police said the traffic signals at the intersection were flashing yellow, and the 44-year-old bus driver is being questioned.

"It's a very unfortunate accident. The bus was empty but the driver was heading back to the terminal at Maplelawn and Barrett, where SMART has a terminal," said Troy police Sgt. Andy Breidenich.

Officials from SMART released this statement:

"We would like to extend our condolences to the family of the pedestrian. Additionally, as is standard protocol, the driver has been suspended without pay, pending the investigation and was taken for drug and alcohol testing."

Meanwhile, Troy police want any witnesses to come forward.

LaMay left behind two children. Her family is accepting donations for funeral arrangements, go here.
