During open enrollment, it might be easy for many seniors to turn toward a big company for advice on Medicare or other health plans.
But Joyce Williams said there’s an even better way.
Rather than go to a big company, Williams decided to turn to Debbie Stroup, a local expert on Medicare, for advice when it was time to enroll for Medicare and see what plan was best for her.
“Debbie is not employed by a specific Medicare plan company, so I didn’t feel that she was just being loyal to her employer,” Williams said.
Williams said that Stroup inquired about her needs and came up with a plan that was different than the one Williams was currently in, which initially made her reluctant.
“I tried navigating Medicare on my own, but every company gave me the positives that they provided, and of course they all sounded wonderful, which left me very confused,” Williams said. “Debbie, however, compared the Medicare plan I had to others, to see which would give me the best coverage for the cost. All I had to do was let her know which medications I was taking and a give her a list of my doctors. She emailed a spread sheet showing me the cost of my current provider with another.”
Stroup said it’s easy for seniors to make medical decisions based on emotions and not fact, listening to the advice of friends or others without fully researching what is best.
“I took her advice and am so happy that I did,” Williams said. “I would encourage everyone to let her make the comparison for you.”
