Vacation dreaming: This Florida hotspot is ideal for families or couples

Beach town boasts gorgeous sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico

It’s finally the time of year when many of us begin daydreaming about the vacations we can soon take.

With spring upon us, summer will be here before you know it.

Perhaps the hardest part might be deciding where you will go (or, maybe that’s the easiest part).

If you’ve been daydreaming about going somewhere with gorgeous sunsets, miles of shoreline, a vibrant dining scene and family entertainment, here’s a consideration for you that will check every box: Fort Myers, on the Gulf Coast in Southwest Florida.

“It’s about a two-hour drive west of Miami,” said Mirian Dotson, communications manager of Lee County Visitor and Convention Bureau. “Being on the west side of the state means gorgeous sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico. There are also 100 different islands in the region, so you can go island hopping and explore new places during a stay in the area.”

Dotson said the family-friendly things you can get into are plenty. To name a few:

  • Kayaking at Riverside Park in the Imperial River.
  • Lakes Park, where there is plenty of playgrounds, a miniature train ride, bike rentals and more.
  • Edison and Ford Winter Estates. Thomas Edison and Henry Ford’s families spent their winters in these historic homes you can now tour, along with botanic gardens, a museum and a laboratory.
  • Mound House on Fort Myers Beach, which pays homage to the Calusa. Here you can explore the ancient cultures of Southwest Florida, take a guided kayak tour in Estero Bay or engage in fun, interactive programs for all ages.

As a native of Fort Myers, Dotson shared some insider tips for visitors.

“Enjoy a boat trip and sit toward the back of the boat,” she said. “You might see dolphins, and, if you clap, it’s one way to interact with them.”

For those looking to take a trip geared more for the couples, Dotson suggested visiting Lovers Key State Park.

You can see the sunset on the beach after a nice spa day and opt for a beach-side sunset dinner.

“Plan a day to wake up early, because you can see a lot of wildlife in the area shortly after sunrise,” she said.
