DTE is accelerating its work to create the grid of the future that will deliver the reliable energy that customers demand and deserve.
Since 2016, the company has nearly tripled annual investments to improve reliability by adding technology and strengthening the electric system. This means the grid will be more resilient to withstand increasingly severe weather, while also delivering cleaner energy to meet DTE’s aggressive carbon reduction goals and the State of Michigan’s new clean energy legislation.
DTE is improving reliability by:
- Deploying technology and transitioning to a smart grid even faster.
- Upgrading existing infrastructure with equipment like stronger poles and fiberglass crossarms to better withstand extreme weather.
- Rebuilding significant portions of the grid.
- Continuing to trim trees around equipment and power lines. Trees falling and damaging DTE’s equipment accounts for 50% of the time customers are without power.
While DTE is investing in the grid to reduce outages 30% and cut restoration times in half by 2029, the company recognizes that there are many customers struggling to meet their basic needs, so it is committed to keeping bills as low as possible and providing resources for the most vulnerable customers.
In the last five years, DTE has connected customers to more than $700 million in financial aid and donated over $50 million to nonprofit partners who provide energy assistance to Michigan residents. DTE’s team works closely with agency partners to find new approaches to quickly support customers in need to help reduce their energy bills. The company is also championing legislation that will increase funding and expand eligibility for bill assistance programs, connecting even more Michiganders to additional support.

DTE is committed to building a smart, resilient grid that will provide Michigan with cleaner, more reliable and affordable energy for customers.
