On this day in 1991, basketball star and Michigan State University legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson announces his retirement from the Los Angeles Lakers after testing positive for HIV.

Johnson, who is widely regarded as one of the best basketball players of all time, is a native of Lansing, Michigan, and is known for his infectious smile and love of the game.

In 1981, Johnson signed a 25-year deal with the Lakers for $25 million.

The three-time MVP, 12-time All-Star, and Olympic Gold Medalist has lived with HIV since 1991, and has become a prominent spokesman for AIDS awareness.
