Big Ten football power rankings: Week 10

No. 6 Ohio State crushes No. 10 Nebraska

No description found

There was one huge game in the Big Ten this weekend, with one of the best in the East facing off with one of the best in the West.

Ohio State came through in a convincing way, ending Nebraska's hope for a College Football Playoff berth. For the rest of the conference, things went mostly as planned, including one of Michigan's most dominant performances yet.

Here are the Big Ten power rankings after Week 10:

1. Michigan

Last week: 1
Week 10 result: Michigan 59, Maryland 3

Michigan has won three games by more than 50 points, but Saturday was the first time the Wolverines dismantled a team with a winning record since playing Penn State. Wilton Speight keeps getting better and better, this time completing 19 of 24 passes for 362 yards and two touchdowns. His downfield passing is improving each week, and his ability to evade the pass rush and extend plays is one of his most underrated qualities. Michigan's offense put up 660 yards in the blowout and helped the Wolverines improve to 9-0.

2. Ohio State

Last week: 3 (Up 1)
Week 10 result: Ohio State 62, Nebraska 3

It was going to be hard to top Michigan's dominant performance on Saturday, but Ohio State did just that. Even before Tommy Armstrong was knocked out of the game, the Buckeyes were completely dominating their fellow top-10 team. Nebraska only put up 204 yards of offense and nine first downs. J.T. Barrett found his absent passing game to throw for 290 yards and four touchdowns. After a couple of down weeks, it looks like Ohio State has become the elite team everybody expected.

3. Wisconsin

Last week: 2 (Down 1)
Week 10 result: Wisconsin 21, Northwestern 7

Week after week, the Badgers pick up quality wins. The Badgers have now knocked off their three biggest competitors in the West Division three weeks in a row -- Iowa, Nebraska and Northwestern. Now, Wisconsin will get a much-deserved break with games against Illinois and Purdue. Wisconsin continues to creep up the rankings as top-10 teams drop off.

4. Penn State

Last week: 4
Week 10 result: Penn State 41, Iowa 14

Penn State was almost as impressive as Michigan and Ohio State, knocking off Iowa by 27 points to improve to 7-2. Saquon Barkley was excellent, carrying the ball 20 times for 167 yards and a touchdown. Trace McSorley didn't need to throw much, but had an efficient game, throwing for 240 yards and two touchdowns on just 18 attempts. The Nittany Lions have a realistic chance to jump into the top 10 Tuesday and play three of the weakest teams in the Big Ten down the stretch.

5. Minnesota

Last week: 6
Week 10 result: Minnesota 44, Purdue 31

Most Power 5 teams with seven wins are ranked in the top 25, but Minnesota's wins are so weak, it isn't anywhere near that mark. The Golden Gophers are only two plays away from being 9-0, but they could still make a huge splash this weekend with a win at Nebraska.

6. Nebraska

Last week: 5 (Down 1)
Week 10 result: Nebraska 3, Ohio State 62

Everybody was glad to see Armstrong return to the sideline after being taken to the hospital following a scary fall to the turf. On second thought, it might have been kinder to let him stay far, far away from the Horseshoe. Top-10 teams don't get dominated like that. Heck, top-20 teams don't get dominated like that.

7. Indiana

Last week: 8 (Up 1)
Week 10 result: Indiana 33, Rutgers 27

It wasn't pretty, but at this point, Indiana just needs to pick up wins and qualify for the postseason. After back-to-back wins over Maryland and Rutgers, the Hoosiers just need one more win over Penn State, Michigan or Purdue to get to No. 6.

8. Northwestern

Last week: 7 (Down 1)
Week 10 result: Northwestern 7, Wisconsin 21

Northwestern is a pretty good football team, but the results just haven't been there this season. The Wildcats lost another close one Saturday after starting the fourth quarter down just six points against Wisconsin. Now, Northwestern needs to win two games against Purdue, Minnesota and Illinois to get into a bowl game.

9. Maryland

Last week: 9
Week 10 result: Maryland 3, Michigan 59

Perry Hills didn't throw an incomplete pass Saturday, going 4 of 4 for 73 yards. But Michigan's defense knocked him out of the game and Caleb Rowe came in to throw two picks in the blowout. Maryland has now lost four of five games since starting 4-0 and needs a win over Rutgers in the final week to avoid disaster and make a bowl game.

10. Iowa

Last week: 10
Week 10 result: Iowa 14, Penn State 41

Most of Iowa's preseason goals are well out of reach, so now it boils down to playing spoiler against Michigan and Nebraska at home. Akrum Wadley and LeShun Daniels Jr. were completely shut down, combining for 46 yards on 19 carries. If they can't get it going against Michigan, they could find themselves in the middle of another blowout.

11. Illinois

Last week: 13 (Up 2)
Week 10 result: Illinois 31, Michigan State 27

Illinois came out victorious in the 2-6 Bowl, picking up its second Big Ten win.

12. Purdue

Last week: 12
Week 10 result: Purdue 31, Minnesota 44

Purdue jumps Michigan State because the Boilermakers beat Illinois and have a Big Ten win.

13. Michigan State

Last week: 11 (Down 2)
Week 10 result: Michigan State 27, Illinois 31

Seven in a row? This weekend's game against Rutgers will determine which team stands alone without a Big Ten win.

14. Rutgers

Last week: 14
Week 10 result: Rutgers 27, Indiana 33

Rutgers has been competitive two weeks in a row. That's a start.
