FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – The football field at Harrison High School bears his name, which is fitting considering John Herrington represents Harrison Hawks football, and has for five decades.
John Herrington came to Harrison High School when it was first built back in 1970. He never expected to stick around so long, or accomplish so much.
“I didn’t start out trying to break records,” Herrington said. “I was just hoping I could keep on coaching for a while.”
In 48 seasons, Herrington has won 13 state titles. At one point, the Hawks won five straight championships. Herrington admits, he’s had some great players along the way.
“Like… John Miller and Drew Stanton and I could go on and on,” he said.
Times have changed, but Herrington hasn’t.
“Yes, I still have my flip phone,” he joked.
His coaching style hasn’t changed either.
Friday he goes for win number 431 against Berkely which would make him the winningest coach in Michigan prep history. He would jump his old friend, Birmingham Brother Rice’s Al Fracassa.
“I don’t really look at it like I’m beating Al,” Herrington said. “We seem to have the same relationship with parents. We’ve been around 50 years. It really doesn’t matter if I’m ahead or if he’s ahead.”
For Herrington, it’s not about records or attention; it’s always been about the kids.
Harrison has two more regular season games to go. They need to win at least one to make the playoffs. Harrison High School is closing after the 2018-2019 season and that’s when Herrington plans to retire.
