Voyageur College Prep – In today's Spotlight, Donte' Owens is the star after winning Favorite Football Coach for Local 4's Fall Fan Choice Awards. After only coaching junior varsity and varsity as an assistant coach for a few months at Voyageur College Prep, Owen's has won over the hearts of many student athletes on the football team.

"I coach running offensive line and linebackers for Varsity and am the Offensive Coordinator for JV," says Owens.

Owens says that his love for coaching football is both internal and external. “Internally, the passion, love and drive I have for the game of football, I invest it into other athletes,” he says. “Externally, it’s making a player better, watching a player grow as an athlete and as a young man, supporting and pushing players for their NCAA dreams and the relationships that come along with coaching.”

And speaking of his passion and love for the game, Owens also had a football career. The coach says he’s had a total of 15 years of playing football. He created a name for himself playing for the Roseville Broncos, and then in high school for the Clintondale Dragons. He moved on to Defiance College, a Division III school where he was a 2-year starter and a 2nd Team All- HCAC. His experience and strong affinity for football also contributes to him being a good coach and role model.

"A good coach needs to be passionate, optimistic and enthusiastic, and be involved in an athlete's life on and off the field," he says. "Coaching not only betters a kid athletically, but morally as well." He continues, "A good role model has good character, perseverance, empathetic and disciplined. If you speak it, you must do it yourself and live by your code. Guide and pave others down the right path, and lead others by actions and not by words."

Apart from coaching, Owens is also a physical education teacher. Similar to his coaching career, this is also Donte'’s first year teaching. “I’m currently in my first year teaching overall and I love every minute of it,” he says. “We cover the majority of all high school sports like Volleyball, Lacrosse, Soccer, Basketball, Football, Hockey and Baseball.”

He continues, “We also do fun activities such as dodge ball, kickball, and badminton. We also have fitness days on Wednesdays and Fridays.”

As for his long term goals as a coach, Donte' says that he aims to become a dominant high school football coach, win titles and change lives. But in order to do this, Donte' says that he's prepared some short term goals to get him there. " I plan to prepare and get athletes to the next level, form athletes into better young men and to be a better coach every single day."
