This goal is the Red Wings’ season in a nutshell

You have to feel for Jimmy Howard right now.

It’s not his fault the Detroit Red Wings are a complete mess. He’s doing the best he can, and you would think he deserves a break or two.

Well, not last night against the New York Rangers. What appeared to be a harmless wrister by Greg McKegg down the wing ended up hitting the shaft of Howard’s stick. He lost sight of the puck, which ended up falling right in front of his crease.

Tyler Bertuzzi put the icing on the cake when he stumbled during his attempt to gather the rebound. The puck was promptly put into the back of the net by McKegg.

And the Red Wings ended up losing, 5-1. Detroit coach Jeff Blashill decided to pull Howard with several minutes remaining in the 3rd period, adding the extra attacker when the score was 4-1.

It didn’t work, and Artemi Panarin eventually put one in the empty net. The Red Wings are now 4-12-1, good enough for last place in the NHL.

But hey, the team announced after the game that they traded for Robby Fabbri, so there’s that, at least?
