BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. – Michigan consumers do not appear to be heading toward much relief from higher gas prices.
The state’s Republican-led Legislature voted to temporarily repeal Michigan’s 27 cents-per-gallon tax for several months.
As of Friday, the average price of one gallon of regular gas in Michigan is $4.19. If you have a 15-gallon tank, the savings would be $4.05.

On Friday, the state of Maryland repealed its 37 cents-per-gallon gasoline tax for 30 days in a show of bipartisan unity. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer says she will not sign a repeal of Michigan’s gas tax. Instead, late Friday, she proposed a temporary repeal of the sales tax on gas.
Repealing the sales tax on gas would amount to $3.77 in savings, assuming the same criteria. That idea was floated in the Legislature earlier and got a tepid reception from the GOP leadership.
But for most drivers who are currently paying around $60 to full up their gas tank in Michigan, any amount of relief would be welcome.
