CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Hundreds of soccer teams are convening in Metro Detroit this holiday weekend to compete for the coveted Canton Cup.
Canton Township is kicking off its 39th annual Canton Cup Soccer Tournament on Friday, May 27, with about 400 teams competing all Memorial Day weekend. Participating soccer teams come from across Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Illinois, and are comprised of boys ages 7-19 and girls ages 7-15, officials said.

Teams are expected to play at least three games each, and playoffs are scheduled for each age group, organizers said. More than 40,000 spectators are expected to watch the competition over the weekend, which will take place throughout the township.
Teams will be playing at the following times on the following days:
- Friday, May 27: 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
- Saturday, May 28: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Sunday, May 29: 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Organizers say games will take place on 26 fields at Independence Park, 11 fields at Heritage Park and four fields at Griffin Park.
