DETROIT – Will Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery return from injury this weekend against the Chargers? Dan Campbell didn’t rule it out.

On Monday, Campbell answered questions after his team’s bye week, and he said Montgomery was involved in the team’s practice.

“Today was really more priming the pump, get them ready for tomorrow,” Campbell said. “But we did some individual, some group, did a special teams segment.”

Campbell said Montgomery was involved in those drills. He said there’s a chance Montgomery and offensive linemen Frank Ragnow and Jonah Jackson could return this weekend when the Lions head to Los Angeles to battle the Chargers.

“Yeah, I think so,” Campbell said. “We’ll see tomorrow when we pad them up, but they’ve been trending the right way now for awhile, so certainly hopeful.”

Montgomery has missed the past two games against the Baltimore Ravens and Las Vegas Raiders after going down with a rib injury in Tampa Bay.

Rookie running back Jahmyr Gibbs has stepped up in Montgomery’s absence. He put up 126 total yards (albeit most were in garbage time) against the Ravens and 189 total yards in a breakout performance against Vegas.

Montgomery was off to a hot start before his injury, rushing for 385 yards and six touchdowns in what amounted to four and a half games. He’s in the first year of a three-year deal with Detroit.

If he, Ragnow, and Jackson are all able to return, the Lions will get a major boost to their running game to start the second half of the season.
