DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers are bringing back a familiar and reliable relief pitcher after a year apart.
Andrew Chafin spent the 2022 season with the Tigers and posted a 2.83 ERA, 3.06 FIP, and 1.17 WHIP across 57.1 innings. He struck out 67 batters and walked 19.
Back before the 2022 season, the Tigers signed “The Sheriff” to a one-year deal with a player option for 2023. After his performance in high-leverage situations for Detroit, Chafin opted out of his second year and signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
He was traded midseason to the Milwaukee Brewers, who allowed him to become a free agent in November.
Overall, it was a disappointing year for Chafin. He posted a 4.73 ERA and 1.42 WHIP across 51.1 innings, though his 4.36 xERA and 4.01 FIP suggest he was a bit unlucky.
Jason Beck, of MLB.com, reports the Tigers and Chafin have once again agreed to a short-term deal. He said the deal is for one year, $4.5 million, with a team option for 2025.
