DETROIT – The Detroit Lions have released an offensive lineman and signed a new cornerback to the practice squad.

Former Michigan offensive lineman Michael Schofield, who was signed to the practice squad Nov. 14, has been released in favor of cornerback Craig James.

James joins the Lions’ practice squad about four weeks after being released by the New York Jets. He appeared in two games earlier this season, making one tackle and defending a pass.

The 27-year-old first broke into the league with the Minnesota Vikings in 2018 out of Southern Illinois. He spent 2019 and 2020 with the Philadelphia Eagles before being out of the league the past two seasons.

It’s unclear if the James addition is related, but this move was announced one day after cornerback Jerry Jacobs missed practice due to a hamstring injury. Jacobs didn’t play much against the Denver Broncos, and the Lions went with Khalil Dorsey and Kindle Vildor in the secondary.

Detroit has a chance to clinch its first-ever NFC North title Sunday in Minnesota.
