DETROIT – The Detroit Lions will face a Week 1 rematch with the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl if they beat the 49ers in the NFC Championship Game.
Win or lose Sunday, the Lions have had their best season in decades, winning the NFC North Division and two home playoff games. The whole journey began in Kansas City, when the Lions went into Arrowhead Stadium and upset the defending Super Bowl champions to kick off the NFL season.
Well, if the Lions can pull another road upset in San Francisco, those same Chiefs will be the only obstacle standing between Detroit and its first-ever Lombardi Trophy.
The Lions are heavy underdogs in the NFC Championship Game against No. 1-seeded San Francisco. Even though both teams finished the regular season 12-5, the 49ers were the more consistently dominant team.
But these Lions have gotten used to the underdog role. Nobody expected them to still be playing in the final weekend of January.
If the Lions do earn a rematch with the Chiefs, it will have a very different feel than the first meeting, which took place without Chris Jones and Travis Kelce. Both missed the Week 1 matchup -- a 21-20 victory for Detroit.
